Case study · AutoCAD

AutoCAD floor plans as the single source of truth.

Every workstation and room in every building is managed in AutoCAD. The same data drives planning, billing and reports.

Client
Large multi-site organization
Years
In service from 2002 to 2013
Scale
≈ 70,000 lines of VB.NET and C#

Before

Floor plans, occupancy lists, move requests and internal billing were all kept separately. Planning a new installation or billing a department meant reconciling them by hand.

What we built

  • Space search inside AutoCAD, with matches circled in colour on the plan
  • Plans coloured by status: occupied, vacant or reserved
  • Data kept in sync between the forms and the drawing blocks
  • Installation planning, billing per cost centre and about 25 reports

Results

  • One source of truth for occupancy, planning and billing
  • Each cost centre billed for the space it actually occupies
  • 11+ years in service, including a full move from VBA/VB6 to .NET

Technologies

  • AutoCAD 2007 and later
  • AutoCAD .NET API
  • COM
  • VBA / VB6 → VB.NET and C#
  • DevExpress
  • Microsoft Access
  • Crystal Reports
